We encourage deep listening and learning.

We curate workshops, salons Pronunciation: suh•lon A gathering of people for a social or intellectual meeting , and design activities that allow participants to reflect on their current practices and inspire justice-oriented work.

Salons

Participants engage in a meaningful discussion with their peers on the role of Black spaces in personal and professional life facilitated by BlackSpace. Salons allow for a casual yet insightful conversation about the importance of cultural presence between multiracial or Black-identifying urbanist audiences.

BlackSpace Salon @ Black in Design Lunch Session
Session goers share their own experiences and learnings in Black spaces.

Manifesto Talks & Workshops

Participants are introduced to the BlackSpace Manifesto and provided ways to apply its principles to their own current working dynamics. These workshops expand thinking about the possibilities for Black cultural presence in their organization’s internal or client projects.

Participants brainstrom ways to bring Manifesto principles into their practices.

Design Charettes

Participants are led through a BlackSpace Manifesto-based brainstorm or rethink of an existing project in their portfolio with an opportunity to design a set of Manifesto-influenced project prototypes. Charrettes expand thinking about the possibilities for affirming Black culture in their work.

Students @ Syracuse charette sketch Manifesto-influenced public spaces.
Participants @ Spaces and Places session sketch Manifesto symbols that resonate with them.

Speculative Design Workshops

“Participants critically reflect on their relationships with public space and a public system (ie. education, police, etc). The workshop encourages participants to use powerful tools of heritage conservation and speculative design to imagine new worlds and communities without conflicts within the present system.”

Participants @ Harvard's Graduate School of Design workshop build new speculative Black spaces.
